Peace appears to be ever-further away in Syria with daily offensives pounding residential areas and the US announcement of a suspension of “participation in bilateral channels with Russia.”
Human Rights Watch and US officials claim Moscow, which backs the Syrian regime in the civil war, is using cluster bombs.
Troops backing the Syrian regime have been accused of deliberately targeting hospitals, particularly in rebel-held eastern Aleppo, which has seen an increase in airstrikes in recent days.
The death toll is rising daily and aid workers say supply convoys are not being allowed through.
Spokesman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Jens Laerke spoke of the issues surrounding the blocking of aid.
“This has been a consistent issue for us, for years, that we do not get the approvals, not only for convoys, but other kinds of approvals. We have talked about bureaucratic obstacles and hindrances, which are being put in our way, yes, by the Syrian government,” he said.
“In a situation like this, red tape may cost lives,” he added.
The United Nations office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says the Syrian government has not yet responded to proposals to send life-saving aid convoys to the worst-affected areas in October.
